Why Car Batteries Die in Cold Weather and How to Prevent It

At minus 18 degrees Celsius, a fully charged battery produces only about 65 percent of its rated cranking amps. At minus 30, that number drops to roughly 50 percent. At the same time, your engine requires significantly more power to crank in cold weather because the oil is thicker and internal components have tighter clearances. How to Know When Your Battery Is Failing

Batteries rarely fail without warning. Watch for these signs in the weeks leading into winter:

  • Slow cranking — If the engine turns over noticeably slower than usual, even on moderate-temperature days, the battery is losing capacity.
  • Dim headlights at idle — Headlights that dim at idle but brighten when you rev the engine may indicate a weak battery or alternator issue.
  • Electrical issues — Flickering interior lights, erratic power window operation, or a clock that keeps resetting can all point to a failing battery.
  • Age — In Grande Prairie's climate, most batteries last three to four years. If yours is approaching that range, test it before winter rather than hoping it survives.

Battery Testing: What a Load Test Reveals

A simple voltage check tells you the battery's resting state but not its ability to perform under load. A proper load test applies a simulated cranking load and measures how the battery responds.
