Why Coolant Flushes Matter in Extreme Temperatures

Your engine's cooling system has one of the hardest jobs in your vehicle: it must prevent your engine from overheating in summer and prevent it from freezing in winter. In Grande Prairie, where the temperature swing between January and July can exceed 70 degrees Celsius, your coolant is under constant stress. A coolant flush is one of the most overlooked maintenance items — and one of the most important.

What Coolant Actually Does

Engine coolant — also called antifreeze — is a mixture of water and ethylene glycol (or propylene glycol) that circulates through your engine, heater core, and radiator. It absorbs heat from the engine and dissipates it through the radiator in warm weather. In cold weather, the glycol component prevents the mixture from freezing, which would crack your engine block and destroy the cooling system. Coolant also contains corrosion inhibitors that protect the metal surfaces inside your engine and radiator from rust and scale buildup.

Why Coolant Degrades Over Time

Those corrosion inhibitors do not last forever. Over time, they break down and the coolant becomes acidic. Acidic coolant attacks aluminum components — water pumps, heater cores, radiators — causing pinhole leaks and internal corrosion. Old coolant also loses its freeze protection and boil-over resistance, meaning it fails at exactly the moments you need it most. In Grande Prairie's extreme temperature range, degraded coolant is a recipe for expensive engine damage.

How Often Should You Flush

Most manufacturers recommend a coolant flush every 50,000 to 80,000 km or every three to five years, whichever comes first. However, the type of coolant matters. Traditional green coolant (IAT) has a shorter life — typically two years or 40,000 km. Extended-life coolant (OAT or HOAT), which comes in orange, pink, or blue, can last up to five years or 100,000 km. Check your owner's manual for the specific coolant type and interval recommended for your vehicle.

Signs Your Coolant Needs Attention

  • Discoloration — Coolant should be bright and clear in whatever colour it was when new. Brown, rusty, or murky coolant has broken down and is no longer protecting your engine.
  • Particles or sediment — Floating debris in the coolant reservoir indicates internal corrosion. This material can clog small passages in the heater core and radiator.
  • Overheating or slow warm-up — If your engine runs hotter than normal in summer or takes unusually long to warm up in Grande Prairie winters, the cooling system may be compromised.
  • Sweet smell from the engine bay — Coolant has a distinctly sweet odour. If you smell it when the engine is warm, you likely have a leak somewhere in the system.

Flush vs Top-Up

Simply adding fresh coolant to old coolant does not solve the problem. A proper flush drains the entire system, runs a cleaning solution through the engine and radiator to remove deposits, and then refills with fresh coolant mixed to the correct concentration for your climate. A top-up only dilutes degraded coolant — the corrosion inhibitors are still depleted and the protective chemistry is still compromised.
