Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection: What to Check Before a Long Drive

The drive from Grande Prairie to Edmonton is roughly 450 kilometres of highway — mostly two-lane sections with limited cell service and long stretches between towns. Whether you are heading south for a medical appointment, a weekend in the city, or a family trip, a basic pre-trip inspection takes 15 minutes and can save you from a dangerous roadside breakdown. Here is what to check before you leave.

Tires: Pressure, Tread, and Condition

Check all four tires plus your spare. Tire pressure should match the specification on the placard inside your driver's door — not the number on the tire sidewall, which is the maximum rating. Under-inflated tires increase fuel consumption, reduce handling, and generate excess heat that can cause blowouts at highway speed. Inspect the tread depth and look for any cuts, bulges, or embedded objects. Fluids: The Five-Minute Check

With the engine off and the vehicle on level ground, check your engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Top up anything that is low. Pay attention to the colour and condition of each fluid — dark or gritty oil, brown coolant, or discoloured brake fluid all indicate that service is overdue. Brakes: A Quick Test

Lights and Signals

Walk around the vehicle and verify all lights are working: headlights (low and high beam), tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, and hazard flashers. Ask someone to stand behind the vehicle while you press the brake pedal and activate each turn signal. Wipers and Belts

Test your windshield wipers and inspect the rubber for cracking or tearing. Streaky or chattering wipers are dangerous in rain, snow, or heavy road spray. Pop the hood and visually inspect the serpentine belt for cracks, fraying, or glazing. A broken belt on the highway means you lose your power steering, alternator, and possibly your water pump — all at once.
