Complete Guide to Your Vehicle's Fluids

Your vehicle runs on more than just gasoline or diesel. Six critical fluids keep everything operating smoothly — from the engine to the brakes to the steering system. Understanding what each fluid does and when it needs attention is one of the simplest ways to extend your vehicle's life and avoid expensive repairs. Engine Oil

Engine oil lubricates, cools, and cleans the internal components of your engine. Without it, metal-on-metal contact would destroy your engine in minutes. Check your oil level monthly using the dipstick — the oil should be between the two marks and should appear amber to dark brown. Black, gritty oil is overdue for a change. Most vehicles in Grande Prairie driving conditions should have oil changed every 8,000 to 12,000 km for synthetic, or 5,000 to 8,000 km for conventional. Transmission Fluid

Transmission fluid lubricates gears, clutch packs, and bearings inside your transmission and also serves as the hydraulic fluid that enables gear changes. Automatic transmission fluid should be checked with the engine running and the transmission in park. Healthy ATF is typically red or pink and translucent. Dark brown or burnt-smelling fluid indicates the transmission is overheating or the fluid has degraded. Most manufacturers recommend transmission fluid changes every 60,000 to 100,000 km, but if you tow regularly, shorten that interval significantly.

Coolant (Antifreeze)

Check the fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir periodically — a dropping level often indicates worn brake pads.

Power Steering Fluid

Power steering fluid provides the hydraulic pressure that makes steering easy. Low fluid causes whining noises, stiff steering, and eventual pump failure. Check the level using the reservoir cap dipstick or sight glass. If you are topping up power steering fluid frequently, you have a leak that needs repair — these leaks do not fix themselves and will get worse. Note that many newer vehicles use electric power steering and do not have power steering fluid — check your owner's manual.

Windshield Washer Fluid

It may seem trivial compared to engine oil, but washer fluid is a safety item.
